LYR Programmes

See what else London Youth Rowing gets up to, come join us!

Active Row London

In partnership with
Sport England, Tideway, Henley Royal Regatta Charitable Trust, City Bridge Trust, Quintain
Active Row London is LYR's flagship school engagement programme, working with 60+ state secondary schools across London. In 2019/20 the programme worked with over 2,000 young people , of which 69% came from a ethnic minority background and half were female. Active Row provides coaching and equipment to partner schools to run indoor rowing clubs through the winter and on-water rowing in the spring and summer. From 2021, the programme will include an increased emphasis on developing life skills alongside being physically active.

Active Row Leeds

In partnership with
Henley Royal Regatta Charitable Trust, The Gemini Boat Race
From April 2021, LYR will begin working with RowLeeds to roll out the Active Row programme in Leeds. This will be the first time LYR's school engagement programme has been run outside London. The expansion aims to work with up to 25 local schools, funded by the Henley Royal Regatta Charitable Trust. Additional funding from The Gemini Boat Race will allow the programme to expand into Bradford and Wakefield. All participants will be given the chance to try indoor rowing, boosting physical activity and the development of life skills, while also being able to take part in LYR's competition programme. Working with Leeds BC, young people will also be offered the chance to try on-water rowing.

Step Up Coach Development Programme

In partnership with
The Henley Royal Regatta Charitable Trust
The Step Up Coach Development programme aims to help ensure LYR's team of coaches is the best they can be. Through the programme, funded by The Henley Royal Regatta Charitable Trust, LYR will recruit coaches from a diverse range of backgrounds, looking well beyond "traditional" rowing coaches. LYR believes this will help make our programmes even more engaging and accessible for the young people we work with. Each cohort of coaches will go through a two year development programme, focusing on providing them all the skills and resources to be exceptional grassroots coaches. An optional third year placement will help broaden their experience. Our ambition is that in the future these coaches will go on to develop engagement programmes beyond LYR in rowing and other sports, boosting the diversity of coaching in rowing and sport more generally.

Talent Inclusion

In partnership with
Sport England, GB Rowing
The LYR Talent Inclusion programme will launch later in 2021. Funded by Sport England and supported by GB Rowing, the programme will allow the delivery of a series of LYR "Open Clubs", youth club style weekly sessions which encourage young people to take the step from the Active Row programme to rowing beyond the school setting. The Open Clubs will feed into a newly established LYR Boat Club, a water sports club with inclusion as its core ethos. LYR BC will operate initially at the Olympic Park, before branching out to the Royal Docks and west London.

Mossbourne Rowing Academy

In partnership with
Mossbourne Federation, Wellington Investment Management, The Leander Trust
The Mossbourne Rowing Academy runs in two state secondary schools in Hackney - Mossbourne Community Academy and Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy. The aim of the programme is to run a rowing programme comparable to, and competing with, those at leading private schools. The programme is fully funded by the Mossbourne Federation, LYR and other donors, meaning that there is no cost to young people taking part. All pupils at the two schools take part in indoor rowing in years 7 and 8, with the option to try on-water rowing, before the Rowing Academy squad focuses on performance rowing from Year 9 onwards. Over 100 pupils from highly diverse backgrounds train multiple times per week as part of the Rowing Academy, led by ex GB rower Tom Wilkinson and his team of coaches.

Alternative Provisions

In partnership with
The Vintners' Company
LYR's Alternative Provisions programme focuses on using rowing as a tool to support young people excluded from mainstream education. The programme, funded by The Vintner's Company, works with up to 10 groups per year from Alternative Provisions and Pupil Referral Units across London. Pupils are challenged to engage with on-water rowing and build confidence, control and focus while learning to work as a team. The ultimate aim of the programme is to support young people to change and manage their behaviour to help them re-enter mainstream education, which is transformational for their long-term life prospects.

Newham On Water

In partnership with
LB Newham, Royal Docks Trust, Royal Albert Dock Trust
Over the past 7 years LYR has partnered with the London Borough of Newham and the Royal Docks Trust to offer watersports to schools and community groups across Newham. Working in partnership with the Sea Cadets, LYR offers rowing, sailing and canoeing to primary and secondary schools from across the borough. The sessions take place at the Royal Docks Adventure centre.

Olympic Park

In partnership with
London Legacy Development Corporation, Volunteer It Yourself, Tideway
In 2021 LYR will take control of a new dedicated watersports pontoon on the Olympic Park. This will form the newest on-water site for LYR, and build on the legacy of LYR's operations on the park since the 2012 Olympics. LYR will use the site to offer rowing and other watersports to local schools, the local community and corporate partners. Working with the London Legacy Development Corporation and Volunteer It Yourself, LYR will build a storage and operations "hub" at the site to allow the pontoon to be used as much as possible. The hub will be funded by LYR's long-term partners, Tideway.

Apprenticeship Scheme

In partnership with
Coach Core Foundation
LYR has worked with the Coach Core sports coach apprenticeship programme in London for a number of years, allowing numerous young rowing coaches to develop their skills, complete their Level 2 coaching qualificaiton and gain practical experience through supporting LYR's programme delivery. Each apprentice works for LYR for up to 20 hours per week, supporting our core coaching team, while also attending 10 hours of education building towards their coaching qualifications. LYR's current apprentice, Lena Chamberlain, went to school at Oasis Silvertown school and as a pupil took part in LYR's on-water rowing programmes at the Royal Docks Adventure in Newham.

LYR Online League

In partnership with
LYR
The LYR Online League launched in 2020, as part of LYR's response to the covid pandemic. Young people from around the world can take part in the free competition, with a new rowing, running and cycling challenge available each month. The Online League will form a key part of our future programmes, encourgaing wider participation and supporting sustained engagement from the young people we are already working with. Since it launched over 450 people have taken part and we are aiming to grow this significantly in the coming years.

History of NJIRC

Take a journey through the NJIRC past

2020
Copper Box Take Two
1987 Participants
Location: Copper Box Arena
NJIRC was again a roaring success in its second year at the Copper Box. Race The Thames continued to grow, with 18 teams raising £30,000 for charity. With covid already looming on the horizon, we were delighted we were able to run the event - NJIRC 2020 was one of the very last rowing events to go ahead before lockdown just a few weeks later.
2019
Race The Thames!
1950 Participants
Location: Copper Box Arena
After nearly a decade at Lee Valley, NJIRC moved onto the Olympic Park, taking up a long-planned residency at the Copper Box Arena. The new venue gave a "big arena" feel to NJIRC and allowed us to launch the first ever edition of Race The Thames, with 11 corporate teams fundraising to help cover the costs of running NJIRC.
2018
Goodbye Lee Valley!
2130 Participants
Location: Lee Valley Athletics Centre
2018 was NJIRC's final year at Lee Valley! After a brilliant 8 years, it was time to refresh and reboot NJIRC. But Lee Valley went out on a high, with the most participants since 2012 and the biggest and best Festival to date.
2017
The Great Outdoors
1930 Participants
Location: Lee Valley Athletics Centre
We continued to develop the outdoor activities running alongside the rowing competition, including activities from the NFL, Triathlon, Cycling Clubs and the ever-popular Smoothie bikes. The space freed up indoors allowed our partners to showcase employment and training opportunities for young people.
2016
10 Up... and Row4Results
1759 Participants
Location: Lee Valley Athletics Centre
Ten Years Old! To celebrate, for the first time we ran the Row4Results grand finale, funded by Tideway, alongside NJIRC. This additional element to the event was a huge success and helped forge LYR's partnership with Tideway which helped fund the hugely successful 2017-2021 Active Row programme.
2015
A sea of rowing machines...
1890 Participants
Location: Lee Valley Athletics Centre
As NJIRC continued to develop, for the first time ever we used 120 rowing machines on the race floor. In the new set up, the machines were facing each other giving the event another competitive edge!
2014
Festival feel!
1900 Participants
Location: Lee Valley Athletics Centre
Now firmly established on the racing calendar, NJIRC continued to develop. Using the space of the Lee Valley venue, we set up a festival feel to the event, with lots of activities alongside the rowing and numerous food trucks. The aim was to give competitors a fantastic day out of school and give the NJIRC the feel of a truly National event.
2013
NJIRC meets GB Rowing
1850 Participants
Location: Lee Valley Athletics Centre
The first edition of NJIRC following the amazing success of the London 2012 Olympics, we were incredibly lucky to welcome members of the GB Rowing Team at NJIRC. The team ran a series of Q&A's for the participants so they could meet their heroes post-London 2012.
2012
NJIRC & The Boat Race
3130 Participants
Location: Lee Valley Athletics Centre
After many years of talking to the Boat Race, we were delighted to welcome both the Oxford and Cambridge crews from that year's boat race to the event. The Oxbridge rowers helped out on the race floor, gave out medals and cheered on the young people taking part. Two different ends of the same sport, it was brilliant to see them getting involved and providing inspiration for everyone taking part!
2011
5 Years Old & Still Growing...
2140 Participants
Location: Lee Valley Athletics Centre
As NJIRC turned 5, the event continued to grow. Word was spreading between schools and the rowing community, and more and more groups from outside London wanted to take part. The move up to the Lee Valley Athletics stadium allowed people from all over the UK to drive to the event - it was such a great venue it would be NJIRC's home for the next 8 years!
2010
A million light bulbs!
2080 Participants
Location: Battersea Evolution
In our final year at Battersea, we used the million bulb ceiling cloth at the venue to let people know what colour (representing a particular age group) were racing next - nobody had any excuse for missing their race that year!
2009
NJIRC embraces the Arts!
1500 Participants
Location: Battersea Evolution
In our second year at Battersea, we worked with a local college to bring an artistic flavour to NIJRC. Students at the college painted artworks around the themes of water, youth and teamwork during the day of the event, which were then used as backdrops at the prize-giving
2008
New Year, New Location!
1100 Participants
Location: Battersea Evolution
Following the success of the inaurural NJIRC, LYR knew the 2008 edition would be bigger and better. We needed a new venue - Battersea Evolution sponsored the event and was our home for the next three years! The new venue helped us take NJIRC to the next level.
2007
Inaugural NJIRC
840 Participants
Location: Hammersmith Town Hall
The first ever NJIRC! LYR worked with LB Hammersmith and Fulham deliver an event in the borough. The Festival of Sport was only just getting started though... a climbing wall was the only other activity running alongside the rowing!
